CATHOLIC CHURCH

The Catholic Church is at long last being questioned on its morals. For too long now, the various state and federal governments have sat on their haunches and did nothing.

Never mind the long list of victims, who have come forward, only to be suppressed by the church and the state. The Catholic Church was the largest participant in the intake of children into its homes and orphanages in Australia.

Many children of yesteryear have come forward and told of their abuse at the hands of clergy members to the various state and federal governments sanctioned inquiries, still government sits back and does nothing.

In 2004 we saw the handing down of the 2004 Forgotten Australians report which included the Stolen Generation, Child Migrants and the Non-indigenous

Child Migrants and the non-Indigenous, it concluded with 39 recommendations, to date many have yet to be met.

However many Forgotten Australians feel of all the recommendations the most important one is number 11, to this day neither the Federal or state governments wont go near it.

“…The rash of cases of sexual misconduct by priests now coming to light in several European countries -- in particular Germany and, more notoriously, Ireland -- reach right up to the Vatican's doorstep: A couple of the alleged cases have brought suggestions that Pope Benedict XVI himself might be guilty of what looks like either negligence or administrative cover-ups when he was an archbishop in his native Germany… “ (Roland Flamani, http://worldpoliticsreview.com/blog/5298/the-pope-and-the-catholic-churchs-sex-abuse-crisis 18/04/2010)

Recommendation 11

8.223 That the Commonwealth Government seek a means to require all charitable and church-run institutions and out-of-home care facilities to open their files and premises and provide full cooperation to authorities to investigate the nature and extent within these institutions of criminal physical assault, xxii

including assault leading to death, and criminal sexual assault, and to establish and report on concealment of past criminal practices or of persons known, suspected or alleged to have committed crimes against children in their care, by the relevant authorities, charities and/or Church organisations;

And if the requisite full cooperation is not received, and failing full access and investigation as required above being commenced within six months of this Report’s tabling, that the Commonwealth Government then, following consultation with state and territory governments, consider establishing a Royal Commission into State, charitable, and church-run institutions and out-of-home care during the last century, provided that the Royal Commission:

.be of a short duration not exceeding 18 months, and be designed to bring closure to this issue, as far as that is possible; and

.be narrowly conceived so as to focus within these institutions, on

.the nature and extent of criminal physical assault of children and young persons, including assault leading to death;

.criminal sexual assault of children and young persons;

.and any concealment of past criminal practices or of persons known, suspected or alleged to have committed crimes against children in their care, by the relevant State authorities, charities and/or Church organisations.

South Australia has yet to address the above reccommendation, meanwhile the Federal Government does nothing to point out to that state it has only addressed the Mulligan Report.
