The long term impact of a childhood spent in institutional care is complex and varied. However, a fundamental, ongoing issue is the lack of trust and security and lack of interpersonal and life skills that are acquired through a normal family upbringing, especially social and parenting skills.
A lifelong inability to initiate and maintain stable, loving relationships was described by many Forgotten Australians who have undergone multiple relationships and failed marriages. Many cannot form trust in relationships and remain loners, never marrying or living an isolated existence.
It is not just the impact that tragic childhood experiences have had for the Forgotten Australians.Their children and families have also felt the impact, which can then flow through to future generations.
We are the FORGOTTEN AUSTRALIANS.
Who stands alongside the FA
A total of 37 organisations around the country, all advocate against child abuse and many of these listed organisations have Forgotten Australians as supporters for their cause as well as members.
Forgotten Australians in many ways lifted the lid on the various institutions and foster carers who were exploiting children. Never before these inquiries; have there been so many organisations putting their hands up and advocating against child abuse and they should be commended for it.
However what about those FA's that bared their souls to the various inquiries and told of the horrors that happened to them as children, how many organisations have sided with them.
Sure their have been apologies from various state and Federal governments, not to mention redress schemes which are laughable, but who stands up for the Forgotten Australians and the Justice that is owed to them.
All Forgotten Australians don't lose sight of what we are chasing the various State and Federal Governments for, Justice Dignity Respect and Compensation. Don't let anyone make you feel ashamed of what every Forgotten Australian is entitled to "Quality of Life".
This takes nothing away all Forgotten Australians advocate against CHILD ABUSE.
